How to Find Us

For the Map Reader The Ordnance Survey reference is SS733092.

By Train Lapford has its own station on the Exeter to Barnstaple route (the 'Tarka Line')

By Road There are two alternatives:-

1. The Obvious Way

A quick look at the map will show you that Lapford is just off the A377. If you are coming from anywhere east of Tiverton, the other route will be quicker, but this one is along more main roads. If you are not east of Tiverton, this way will be better anyway.

Turn roughly northwest off the A377 as it brushes the edge of Lapford. Follow this road over river and rail bridges and then on its way up the village. You will pass (amongst others) the Post Office and Parish Church on your left and the Old Malt Scoop Inn on your right. Carry on up the hill and out of the village at the top, having passed the butchers on your left. After about half a mile, you will see a light cream house on your right (Blackberry Gate). Immediately after this, turn sharp right into a narrow lane. The bungalow on your right at the top of the lane is Wilanson.

2. Through the Back of Beyond

Definitely quicker if you are coming from east of Tiverton, down the M5 for example. Incidentally, when travelling down from the London direction, we prefer the route M25 - M3 - A303 - A358 to Junction 25 on the M5. If you prefer 'solid' motorway, then M25 - M4 - M5 is the simple choice.

This route assumes that you are approaching Junction 27 of the M5.

M5 Junction 27. Signposted Tiverton / Barnstaple A361. Take A361 towards Tiverton. This is a dual carriageway.

After about 7 miles, at the first roundabout you come to, take the first exit, signposted Tiverton. Almost immediately, you come to a mini-roundabout. Take the second exit. At the next roundabout, take the second exit and pick up signs for Witheridge B3137.

'Straight over' another mini-roundabout (Safeway supermarket and petrol station on the left), over river and mill leat bridges to another mini-roundabout, where you turn right, following signs for Witheridge B3137. Then take second left up Longdrag Hill (well named!), signposted Witheridge B3137.

After about 2.5 miles, pass through Withleigh.

Another 5 miles takes you to Nomansland.

About one mile after Nomansland, turn left down a narrow road which is signposted Thelbridge / Chawleigh. (If you miss this turning, don't worry - you will find yourself coming into Witheridge after less than a mile. Just turn left immediately before entering the village, onto the B3042, and you will be on the road which the narrow one joins into.)

After 1.5 miles on the narrow lanes, bear left into a more major road (B3042), again signposted Thelbridge / Chawleigh. After half a mile (Thelbridge Cross Inn) go straight over the crossroads. The road narrows again here. You will pass a red-painted corrugated iron building on the right after about 100 yards.

After 2 miles, straight over the crossroads at a small hamlet (Three Hammers) with a few houses and a chapel. After another ½ mile, slow down for a sharp double bend round a cottage.

The next turning left, after less than a mile, is signposted Lapford. This road will take you over the hill, down and up again to a T-junction (Lower Forches Cross). Turn left up the hill to Higher Forches Cross, where you bear right (signposted Lapford / Exeter).

As you come down the hill, our lane (Blackberry Lane) is the first turning on your left, just before a light cream house on the left (Blackberry Gate), and also just before the first telegraph pole on the right. You may see our 'Vegetables for Sale' signs at the end of the lane!

Wilanson is the bungalow immediately on your right at the top of the lane and the driveway is after the bungalow. Backing in is easier than backing out!
